Dr. Maria Kornakova is a Manager of Bushfire Services at FPA Australia, she holds a degree in architecture and was a Fulbright Scholar. She successfully finished postdoctoral fellowships at Massey University in New Zealand and the University of Melbourne for her Ph.D. Now she has a professional interest in “bushfire risk reduction practices through building, planning, and architecture,” which is the main emphasis of her research.
Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) is Australia’s peak industry body for fire safety, which provides information, services, and education to the fire protection sector and the community. “The FPA administers the Bushfire Planning and Design (BPAD), which was designed for individuals (practitioners) delivering bushfire assessment, planning, design, and advice services. It accredits practitioners who meet criteria based on specific accreditation and competency requirements, including a detailed knowledge of and ability to practically apply the relevant planning, development, and building legislation and policies, the Building Code of Australia, and Australian Standard AS3959 Construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas” (FPA, n.d).
