On the 2nd and 3rd of February 2024, a wildfire severely impacted populated areas in the Valparaíso region. CIGIDEN published a report on the scope and impacts of this event. This document indicates that this wildfire is the largest in terms of its impact in the history of Chile, affecting about 15,500 housing, more than 8,500 hectares and leaving 131 victims (at the time of publication), in the communes of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué and Villa Alemana.

The report developed by CIGIDEN, with support from the SECPLAN of the Municipality of Viña del Mar, focused on:

• Definition of vulnerable areas

• Assessing damage to critical infrastructure and neighbourhood/urban equipment

• Investigating the functioning of the Emergency Alert System (SAE) alert of the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED)

• Identifying the recovery requirements or needs of the affected people.
